College Students Really Need Powers of Attorney

I have talked about this before here, but this coming week is the start of school for many college students so this is a friendly reminder for parents of college students to keep this on their radar. They need to be thinking about the unthinkable – what if their child has an accident while away at college? Your child may be 18 but they wouldn’t have anyone to advocate for themselves in emergencies unless a health and financial powers of attorney are in place. By establishing these documents, college students can grant their parents legal authority to act on their behalf should they become incapacitated while away at school. If your child attends college out-of-state, you should connect with an attorney licensed in that state to help prepare these documents. Your child’s school will likely have resources on this topic as well.

Good luck to everyone starting college this week. Here’s to hoping everyone has a wonderful college experience – some of the best years of my life were certainly spent in college at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. And just as importantly best of luck to parents dropping their child off at college for the first time!
